He was very polite and did his best, but the bottom line is that Apple won't factory-restore my iPod to OS 2.2.1, and won't escalate the issue up the support food-chain. Oh, I could bring it to an Apple Store and have them look at it, but since I live in Atlantic Canada, and the nearest Apple Store is in Toronto, that isn't really an option. So my iPod touch is essentially a paperweight, since it won't work in my car, which is where I mostly use it. Thanks, Apple. Apple and Mini continue to deal with this issue by ignoring it (even if they're working on it behind the scenes). We'll soon see if Apple's willing to downgrade my iPod touch to OS 2.2.1 (I get shut down with a meaningless error message when attempting it myself).
