Hans Albarda: Off-grid Since 1971

CBC News Morning had a short segment on Hans Albarda of Wolfville, Nova Scotia, today. His solar-powered home isn’t connected to Nova Scotia Power at all, and he wakes up to 21 degrees Celcius on the coldest winter days. Some links:

Off-grid since 1971 is a slight exaggeration….I knew Mr Albarda when he lived in Owen Sound (Grey County Ontario) and was one of many people who helped him build his off-grid home. He lived in downtown Owen Sound for a number of years, just down the road from me. I moved to Owen Sound in 1972 and it AFTER that, maybe 2 or 3 years that Mr Albarda moved from a country home to Owen Sound and then built his off-grid home in the country. Having said that, he was one of very few who were actively promoting solar and windmills (designing his own blades). He was ahead of his time in this area. His first solar home is still in use.

    Hello,

This thermal mass house is beautiful.

Is it possible to have plans for this home?
